Unified Azure SQL Managed Instance and Database Access with Microsoft Entra ID

Connect to Azure SQL Managed Instance and Azure SQL Database together from one Diagnostic Server using Microsoft Entra Integrated authentication.

Pre-requisites: To connect to an Azure SQL Managed Instance environment using Microsoft Entra Integrated authentication, the following conditions must be satisfied:

  • The Azure SQL Managed Instance and the system must be on the same network.

  • The Microsoft Entra Integrated authentication user for the Azure SQL Managed Instance must also be the log-on user for the Diagnostic Server service.

Similarly, to connect to an Azure SQL Database environment using Microsoft Entra Integrated authentication, the following conditions must be satisfied:

  • The Azure SQL Database and the system must be on the same network.
  • The Microsoft Entra Integrated authentication user for the Azure SQL Database must also be the log-on user for the Diagnostic Server service.

Accordingly, to connect to both environments using Microsoft Entra ID from a single machine, the following conditions must be satisfied:

  • The Azure resources (both the Azure SQL Managed Instance and Azure SQL Database) and the system must be on the same network.
  • The Microsoft Entra Integrated authentication user for both Azure resources (the Azure SQL Managed Instance user and the Azure SQL Database user) must also be the log-on user for the Diagnostic Server service.

From Spotlight Client | Configure | Connections:

Select the Microsoft Entra Integrated from the Authentication field. User and Password fields are disabled for this authentication mode and will be using Dignostic Server credentials. Ensure the user is allocated as an admin user for Azure SQL Managed Instance and Azure SQL Database active directories and Spotlight Diagnostic Server is logged in using the same user credentials.

Delete the connection

From the Spotlight Client

  1. Click Configure | Connections.
    Configure Connections
  2. Right-click on the connection and select Delete.

If you have customized the alarms set for this connection or the scheduling information then those customizations will be deleted with the connection. You may like to backup your customizations before you delete the connection. To do so, backup the \Agent\Conf folder in the Spotlight Spotlight Diagnostic Server installation folder.
